2017 Mercedes Benz C300 C43 C63 S AMG CONVERTIBLE TECH REVIEW

0:00
friends welcome to beautiful rainy
0:04
slovenia we are here to drive the 2017 c63s a mg convertible not perfect

0:15
weather if I'm honest
0:16
so i am going to switch to rain gear here in advance of our full first drive
0:23
review
0:23
why don't you and I do a tech review and go through not just to see 63s but the c
0:31
convertible range and we should probably start where we always start the engine
0:41
ok so let's use the full fat c63s as a stand-in for all of the sea convertibles

0:51
it starts with the c300 now we've driven that engine before a couple of different
0:56
applications that is the four-cylinder two liter inline direct-injected

1:02
turbo-charged engine that is 241 horsepower but more interestingly 273
1:08
pound-feet of torque which comes in at a very low engine speed thirteen hundred
1:12
rpm
1:12
then we move up to the new c43 convertible gonna make that in the coop
1:17
as well and we will have that on the show later on down the road and that is
1:21
a three liter twin-turbo v6 that's 362 horsepower but more interestingly it's
1:27
384 pound-feet of torque have a twin turbo v6 that's pretty good
1:31
and it comes in at 2000rpm stays flat all the way to 4000 RPM
1:36
then we move on to this the favored one that I like and that is the one that is
1:41
built by Patrick Vogel in this case this is a 4-litre twin turbo v8 and you're
1:47
probably thinking well that's in the AMG GT now we covered this in the c63 as
1:51
coupe
1:52
it is technically the same engine but there are some changes namely this one
1:56
is not a dry-sump lubrication system and it comes in two flavors there is like
2:01
the I guess half sugar version and that is the c63 that's a lowly 469 horsepower
2:09
and 479 pound-feet of torque which comes in and it also a very low engine speed
2:13
1750 rpm stays flat all the way to 4500 RPM then there's this
2:21
this one is the full-fat c63s and it goes to 503 horsepower but more
2:27
importantly 516 pound-feet of torque which comes in also at 1750 rpm stays
2:33
flat all the way up to 4,500 rpm are now in the full first drive review we're
2:39
going to drive this one later on down the line will drive the other two but
2:43
notice in this one
2:44
the two turbo sit in the V and the full first drive review you and i'll spend
2:48
some time in terms of the logic of why they sit there and the two main benefits
2:53
so with that
2:54
let's press on to the bits that affect driving dynamics so
3:00
oh yeah right about the time we're pressing onto driving dynamics the sky
3:04
literally opened and we didn't seem to have a couple of sets of animals in an
3:09
arc on hand so let's try this a bit of a different way
3:12
the base c-class convertible - 300 can be fitted anyway you want as long as the
3:16
two wheel drive
3:17
however there are some differences in the transformation from coupe
3:20
convertible
3:21
first and foremost is the steel spring setup it actually sits a bit lower the
3:26
ride height of the lower and then second is actually the height of the vehicle
3:30
it's maybe two tenths of an inch taller than the coupe
3:34
then there's the c43 version of the convertible frankly this is one of the
3:37
more interesting flavors and we kinda already drove this one but more in a
3:42
sedan version was called AC 450mg sportback then make sure you check out
3:46
that episode but basically what this does is it's an all-wheel-drive
3:51
convertible but it kind of goes one step further than what we've driven like
3:55
outies we know how DS have the split of 64 tea with the 60 in the back
4:01
what the engineers in the fossil box did is they changed it to
4:06
31 in the front - 65 back and it can vary a bit based on traction loss but
4:11
ultimately there is much more power going to the rear of the car now
4:15
the power gets to the wheels in either case the 300 or the 43 with that 9g
4:21
tronic transmission which we've now driven in a couple of different cars in
4:24
that cell 550 the GL e450 and the c-4 50 mg so make sure you go back and check
4:30
out those episodes and that is definitely different than the full fat
4:34
c63 model which is a seven-speed multi clutch unit but speaking of full-fat
4:39
let's go back to a point in our shoot day here where the weather was just a
4:43
bit more cooperative
4:46
so we need to separate this between the c63 and the c63 s so in the c63 the
4:54
brakes for example they are basically 14.2 inch diameter rotors front and rear
5:01
but if you were to move up to the c63 s which this is that goes to 15.4 inch
5:07
diameter rotors in the front stays with a 14 point to in the rear
5:12
now this one let's just say we should probably be doing an options game on
5:16
this one because this one's got virtually everything
5:18
this has got the carbon ceramic rotors and it's basically 15.8 in the front on
5:23
the diameter so let's put aside the brakes and let's press on some of the
5:27
bits underneath the car
5:28
now do you remember in the c63 s episode the coop
5:32
we spent a lot of time talking about the dimensions of this car has changed
5:36
drastically from the sedan
5:38
now let's just kind of recap here in the front of the coop you had about a little
5:44
over two inches
5:46
increase in with in the rear it's about two and a half inches increase in with
5:51
same thing carries over here
5:53
so basically the car is sitting on a wider tracks that's definitely going to
5:57
affect driving dynamics
5:58
then we need to press on to the actual chassis controls so we've driven in
6:03
virtually every Mercedes down from like a GL see all the way up to like that s
6:07
63 coupe
6:09
there is basically a dynamic control system soft meaning comfort mode all the
6:14
way up to either Sport Plus or race mode in a car like this
6:18
well this changes a bit in that there's a ride control system fitted as standard
6:23
and that's really no different than a c63 or c63s in terms of the coupe or
6:28
sedan but really what the ride control does is it separates out the adjustable
6:34
dampers from the rest of the different map things like the engine and the
6:38
transmission
6:39
follow me this far now we gotta move to the rear
6:43
so basically on a c63 there is a mechanical dismember we got excited in
6:48
the SL 63 episode how they finally fit a mechanical diff to the rear of the SL
6:54
which made it
6:54
I would argue a little bit better than the normal GT same situation here
6:59
but then this one is a c63 as we've discussed this one has an electronic
7:04
limited slip differential
7:07
oh yes as pretty as that spot was it rained there too
7:12
so as I was saying about that he'd if most of these things are break actuated
7:15
nowadays which is to say they're not really that responsive but we're seeing
7:19
a trend where a number of manufacturers are starting to install these
7:23
electrically actually clutches to send the torque where it's needed and this is
7:28
not an exception
7:29
so we've seen this on the c63 s coupe and we drove it on so quickly with
7:33
scotty and here carries into the convertible
7:36
there's another like neat was being trick in here where it's got the
7:39
adjustable engine mount so things like Porsha sport chrono
7:43
but this is a Mercedes with a v8 engine where it sits in the front that has this
7:48
thing
7:48
and with that I feel like we haven't addressed the elephant in the room here
7:51
and that is the actual roof but being it's been pissing down rain all day why
7:55
don't we save that for the full first drive review so make sure you come back
7:59
for that but there are some other neat tricks here that we can discuss to have
8:03
something to do with the rain and that is believe it or not the mirrors the
8:07
mirrors notice they don't sit in the actual sale part of the door they
8:10
actually sit on the doors themselves and this is one of these like happy
8:14
incidences where like the scientists that deal with the aerodynamics and the
8:18
designers actually agreed for like the one time in their lives and really it's
8:21
not a function of look there it's actually a function of function so it
8:26
number one it actually lowers the wind noise that goes around
8:29
mirrors but in cases where you're dealing with lots of rain like today you
8:33
can see where the actual water can be challenges like these bits on the side
8:37
these lips they're not there for like design our dynamics are designed to get
8:41
the water away from the mirror itself something I wouldn't have found out if
8:46
it didn't piss down rain today
8:48
so with that what do we got well a very high-tech convertible which will have to
8:52
spend more time talking about me full first drive review and a very
8:56
challenging shoot day actually the rain wasn't the only thing that interrupted
8:59
us we actually a more pleasant introduction here i'll just show it to
9:03
you rather than tell it to you want to scare these people
9:11
and with that incredibly picture as golf treas moment I want to leave you guys
9:16
with a question straightforward one of that here we are discussing a folding
9:20
soft top convertible von Deutschland
9:22
but really my question is about packaging do you prefer a folding soft
9:26
top or do you prefer a folding heart up and don't just tell me which one you
9:31
prefer
9:31
but tell me why you prefer that type of packaging and for good measure
9:36
let me know what region of the world you hail from and if you daily drive one of
9:40
these types of convertibles
9:41
let me know in the comments below or via our social media a motorman TV own work
9:46
motoman TV oh word facebook twitter and instagram and with that only view with
9:50
two things and one make sure you download our fancy new mobile
9:52
application which be download for free at Apple iTunes and Google Play and
9:56
number two instead of telling you a fun fact i'm going to show you a fun fact
10:00
from yesterday when the weather was better as we were traipsing around the
10:04
beautiful countryside of Slovenia
10:07
it's one of these situations where were you going to do about it so you got to
10:10
stop and smell the roses
10:12
so in this case is the Rose is are really not roses the retractor
10:17
but look at what kind of track thirties you know the old story of how the sports
10:23
cars got started
10:24
well this is how they got started
10:27
so there really are lamborghini trackers even today in places like slovenia
